NovaSure® Endometrial Ablation
What It Is
Heavy periods during perimenopause can be more than inconvenient — they can be completely life-disrupting. NovaSure® Endometrial Ablation is a quick, one-time, in-office procedure that permanently reduces or eliminates heavy menstrual bleeding. It works by gently removing the uterine lining (endometrium) using a thin, mesh device that delivers precisely controlled radiofrequency energy. No hormones. No hysterectomy. No hospital stay.
What We Treat
• Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia)
• Prolonged periods during perimenopause
• Anemia caused by excessive blood loss
• Period-related fatigue and quality-of-life disruption
How the Technology Works
The NovaSure device is a slender, expandable mesh wand that is inserted through the cervix — no incisions required. Once in place, it conforms to the unique shape of your uterus and delivers radiofrequency energy for approximately 120 seconds. This controlled energy ablates the uterine lining, significantly reducing or stopping future periods. The entire procedure takes about 5 minutes from start to finish.
What to Expect — Your Journey
Determining if You’re a Candidate
Endometrial ablation is not right for everyone. Candidacy is carefully determined by a gynecologic provider based on your symptoms, medical history, and reproductive goals.
Pre-Procedure Evaluation
Before scheduling the procedure, important steps are taken to ensure safety and appropriateness. This typically includes:
An endometrial biopsy
A transvaginal ultrasound
These can be completed with your current gynecologist or primary care provider if preferred.
Scheduling Your Procedure
Once candidacy is confirmed, your procedure can be scheduled at a time that is convenient for you.
Where the Procedure Takes Place
Endometrial ablation is most commonly performed as a simple in-office procedure.
For patients who prefer, it may also be performed at an outpatient surgical facility, depending on insurance coverage and authorization.
Recovery & Downtime
Most women return to normal activities within 1 to 2 days. Some experience mild cramping similar to menstrual cramps for 24 to 48 hours. Over-the-counter pain relievers are typically all that's needed for comfort.
When to Expect Results
Results develop gradually over the first 1 to 3 menstrual cycles following the procedure. In clinical studies, 9 out of 10 women reported significantly lighter periods, and about half reported their periods stopping completely.
Important Notes
NovaSure is intended for women who do not wish to become pregnant in the future, as the procedure affects the uterine lining. It is not a form of contraception. Your provider will discuss all considerations during your consultation.
